“House Party” is realtor.com’s official podcast about the overlapping worlds of real estate and pop culture, hosted by Natalie Way, Erik Gunther, and Rachel Stults. Click the player above to hear our takes on this week’s hot topics. It’s one of the biggest real estate stories of the year: Barack and Michelle Obama are in the process of buying an estate on Martha’s Vineyard. After years of vacationing on the island as renters, they finally found a property they’d like to make their own—and it’s a multimillion-dollar fixer-upper. Don’t believe us? Take a look at the listing photos! The 7,000-square-foot estate has good bones, and the architecture is typical of a New England seaside estate (white coffered ceilings, expansive windows, exterior shingles, etc.). Plus, it’s on 29 acres, so there’s plenty of room to build out the compound. But the decor is begging to be overhauled. This week on “House Party,” we discuss the ins and outs of the former president’s palatial new pad, including its location on the island (it’s not close to their beloved Chilmark) and whether it’s actually worth the $14.8 million price tag. On this episode we also cover the following:

Now, he’s also stepping away from his residence in Bellevue, WA, after owning the home for just a little over a year. The 33-year-old Seattle Seahawks defensive end suffered a serious neck injury during the 2017 season and wasn’t able to make enough of a recovery to continue his playing career. Listed for $3.3 million, his Washington manse was finished in the spring of 2018 and is a true gem. The inviting exterior offers a cool contrast of brown wood and slate gray. Measuring in at 4,664 square feet, the home features five bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom. There’s a roomy kitchen with island, a master bedroom with its own fireplace, and easy access to downtown Bellevue. It sits about 11 miles across Lake Washington from the Seahawks’ home of CenturyLink Field. After the neck injury, Avril was up in the air about whether he would make a comeback. “I just want to do what’s right for me from the standpoint of after football, and how that would affect it,” Avril told the NFL Network’s “NFL Up to the Minute,” after the Seahawks’ decision to list him with the designation “Failed physical.” “If the doctor comes back and says ‘Things aren’t healing right,’ or even if things are healing right, ‘One hit could mess you up,’ or whatever, then that’s an easy decision. But right now, in my head, I definitely want to start training and doing things like I am going to play.” Not long after, Avril decided to call it quits from the NFL. After being drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2008, the Jacksonville, FL, native played five seasons in the Motor City before joining Seattle in 2013. He was instrumental in helping Seattle capture its first Super Bowl championship in the 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in 2014’s Super Bowl XLVII. Avril, the son of Haitian immigrants, who played college ball for Purdue University, was also named to the Pro Bowl that year. The storm is expected to become a Category 4 hurricane, with wind speeds up to 156 mph, when it touches down in Florida late Monday or early Tuesday. The president and the Trump Organization own at least nine Southern Florida properties that sit directly on the path that Dorian is predicted to take, according to CNN. That includes his famed Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, which Trump has sometimes called the “Winter White House.” More than 970,000 homes on the east coast of the state could be vulnerable to a storm surge, according to a recent report from real estate data firm CoreLogic. In a worst-case scenario, it could cost approximately $206 billion to rebuild all of the single-family and multifamily homes such as condos and apartments destroyed by the disaster. “Dorian is likely to remain an extremely dangerous hurricane while it moves near the northwestern Bahamas and approaches the Florida Peninsula through the weekend,” the National Hurricane Center said. CoreLogic’s estimates are based on the 5 p.m. Thursday forecast from the National Hurricane Center. Forecasts are just that—and often change as hurricanes change paths and sizes and lessen or worsen in intensity. “A lot can change between now and then,” says Daniel Betten, a principal scientist at CoreLogic. “It’s possible, but not likely, the storm could recurve into the Carolinas or miss Florida and curve into the ocean.” That means if Dorian weakens and hits Florida only as a Category 1 storm, fewer than 120,000 homes could potentially be affected if it follows its current path. But if it intensifies and reaches a cataclysmic Category 5 status, nearly 1.3 million homes could be damaged or leveled by the storm. “In the short-term, we are likely to see disruption to home sales and construction, along with a decline in tourism and hotel demand, a major contributor to the state’s economy,” realtor.com®’s Senior Economist George Ratiu said in a statement. Where the hurricane touches down also matters. “If the hurricane hits West Palm Beach or south [of it], the losses will be significantly higher because it’s much more densely populated,” says Betten. But “a good portion of the eastern Florida coast can expect to see at least tropical-force winds.” Florida authorities declared a state of emergency on Wednesday in preparation for the hurricane. “Be prepared and please follow State and Federal instructions, it will be a very big Hurricane, perhaps one of the biggest!” Trump tweeted on Thursday morning. In addition to Mar-a-Lago, other Trump-related properties that could be affected in Florida include Trump Towers, a condo complex in Sunny Isles Beach; Trump National Doral Miami, a golf resort; Trump National Golf Club, in Jupiter; Trump International Golf Club, in West Palm Beach; Trump Hollywood, a condo and rental tower in Hollywood Beach; and Trump Grande, a condo, hotel, and resort project in Sunny Isles Beach, according to CNN. He also has two private homes in West Palm Beach. The oceanfront estate reportedly owned by NBCUniversal executive Ronald Meyer has found a buyer, Variety reports. The listing price was a gasp-inducing $125 million, but the final sale price has yet to be disclosed. After Meyer and his long-time wife, Kelly Chapman Meyer, announced their split last year, Meyer began quietly to shop around the estate in a discreet fashion. But with no acceptable offers forthcoming, the home landed on the market in January. If the sale closes at list price, it could set a record for the area. “Thank God for the Ron Meyer sale,” says listing agent Tracy Tutor with Douglas Elliman Beverly Hills. Tutor wasn’t involved in this transaction, but she was ecstatic nonetheless, saying, “I’m thrilled about it. It just confirms that Malibu is stronger than ever.” Tutor recently launched a $500 million ultraluxury portfolio of 13 properties in the Malibu area, ranging from $16 million to $100 million. Recession, schmecession? Tutor opined to us that Malibu appears to be immune. “Whatever’s happening in the global markets, there are certain areas that aren’t affected. And Malibu is one of them.” As for this Malibu property, it’s set on 3 acres of private, parklike land. The spread features six bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms, and 13,693 square feet. With a contemporary design, the layout includes high ceilings, walls of glass, and a great room that overlooks the ocean. According to the listing details, the property is located in “the most exclusive area in Malibu, with a private pathway to one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere.” The Charles Gwathmey-designed residence was built for the Meyers. The interior includes an “incredible” master suite, a two-story paneled library and gallery, and a gourmet kitchen with a family room. There’s also a home theater, gym, office, and guest suites. Additional perks include two guesthouses, a tennis court, and a spa house. Of course, Malibu is no stranger to stratospheric price tags. Tutor currently holds the listing for a $100 million build set to be completed next year. Dubbed Case 5, it’s set on the Malibu bluffs. The minimalist property recently topped our list of most expensive home for the week. Last year, the $110 million sale of the beachfront home of Peter Morton, co-founder of the Hard Rock Cafe, set a record for the county. It’s since been broken by the recent sale of the megamansion known as the Manor inL.A.’s Holmby Hills for $119.7 million. The recent transaction brings home the fact that the Malibu real estate market spins on its own axis. “It isn’t the first massive sale that is happening in Malibu, and it’s not going to be the last,” says Tutor. The pristine three-story townhome in the Miami suburb that Mr. Bush and his wife, Columba, sold off just last week is back on the market as a luxury rental, according to the agency that handled the sale, Lowell International Realty. Lowell is now listing the rental on behalf of the new owner, who they declined to identify. Mr. Bush, 66, a former Florida governor and past presidential hopeful, closed on the house last Friday for $1.625 million, over $300,000 more than they purchased it for in 2011, according to property records. The four-bedroom house is nestled in Almeria Row, a development that puts a distinct South Florida twist on the kinds of townhouse blocks found in London or New York. Instead of limestone or brick, the property features a white-stucco facade with a Spanish-style red-tile roof. Pictures of the unfurnished home show the front door opens into a large living room that flows into a hallway with a grand winding staircase to the second level. A Calcutta marble kitchen at the back of the home overlooks a small private courtyard built around a fountain-sized splash pool and several trees, according to the images. The property comes with a two-car garage and separate guest accommodations. The Bushes, who could not be reached for comment, first put the home up for sale in February asking $1.795 million and went into contract last month, listing records show. Mr. Bush, the son of late President George H.W. Bush and the younger brother of President George W. Bush, was governor of Florida from 1999 until 2007. He was expected by many to be the Republican nominee in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, before the meteoric rise of Donald Trump. This week, the baseball exec sold a home in short order. Hoyer just closed on a $2,440,000 deal for his five-bedroom home in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. He put the 4,725-square-foot home up for sale in June with a price tag of $2,495,000 and told the Chicago Tribune he was selling strictly for family reasons. And Cubs fans needn’t worry—the GM didn’t stray far. He really did just want something … bigger. Hoyer purchased a six-bedroom home about 3 miles to the north for $3,087,500 in late June. The gorgeous 7,500-square-foot home is located in the city’s Ravenswood neighborhood. Located on a huge lot, the much larger home features a second-floor lofted family room, as well as plenty of oversized windows and high ceilings. Sporting endeavors are also a highlight—the home has a backyard basketball court (near a screened-in porch) and an interior home theater/golf simulator. There’s also a secluded outdoor hot tub and two garages. The home was sold by Jeff Lowe of Compass. “We’re staying in the city,” Hoyer told the Chicago Tribune in June. “We have three boys now, and we bought a place that’s a slightly bigger house but that is on a bigger lot, to give them room. I didn’t want (anyone) to think we’re leaving. We’re happy here and hope to be here for a long time.” A native of Plymouth, NH, Hoyer began his front-office career in 2002 as assistant general manager of the Boston Red Sox. After general manager Theo Epstein left Boston in 2005, Hoyer was a member of the “Gang of Four” (along with the executives Ben Cherington, Bill Lajoie, and Craig Shipley), who ran the Red Sox. In 2009, Hoyer was hired as GM of the San Diego Padres. He spent two seasons out West before rejoining Epstein in Chicago. In 2016, the duo helped lead the Cubs to their first World Series championship since 1908. The mansion in question had great poll numbers and crushed all other candidates to claim the title of most popular home on realtor.com® this week. The former first family are no strangers to the island and have vacationed there for years. After renting the compound over the summer, they decided to stay a little … longer. Of course, curious citizens want to see where the former leader of the free world will be resting his head. Clicks followed, and it was a landslide in favor of this marvelous 29-acre spread. Apart from the Obamas’ future residence, you were busy clicking on a farmhouse featured on season 3 of “Fixer Upper,” a historic Mississippi home resembling a gingerbread house, and the Texas childhood home of the late “Charlie’s Angels” bombshell Farrah Fawcett. The WWE stars Mike “The Miz” Mizanin and his wife, Maryse Mizanin, recently purchased a handsome home in Thousand Oaks, CA, for $6.4 million, according to Variety. The English-style manor on 1.27 acres is located in the guard-gated Country Club Estates of North Ranch, and offers golf course and mountain views. Built in 2001, the 10,400-square-foot floor plan boasts six bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms. Guests are greeted by a grand double staircase. The interior layout includes an eat-in kitchen with breakfast nook, which adjoins a family room with a wet bar. There’s a formal dining room with fireplace, as well as a large living room with fireplace. The home also includes a movie theater and a game room. The spacious master suite boasts a fireplace and sitting area, as well as a bath with dual vanities. The grounds include landscaped lawns, gardens, and a pool. It’s easy to dine outdoors in the covered dining area, and enjoy the alfresco kitchen and bar. There’s also a separate guesthouse should any visitors need to spend the night. Should the duo want to step out, the home is a quick drive to the parks, shops, and restaurants at Westlake Village. The superstars have made headlines for other real estate transactions. Earlier this year, they placed a home in Austin, TX, on the market for $2.75 million. It was sold for $2.64 million. They also listed their home in L.A.’s Hollywood Hills for $3.65 million in 2017. The home was sold a year later for $3.05 million. Now 38, Mike got his start in 2001 on MTV’s “Real World,” before entering the world of professional wrestling. He’s won 18 championships and is one of the 10 most prolific pay-per-view performers in WWE history. The Canadian-born Maryse, 36, is a professional wrestler, actress, reality TV star, and model. She’s currently signed to WWE Raw as the manager of The Miz. The duo also star in a reality show, “Miz and Mrs” on USA Network. It landed on the market for $40.5 million after originally dipping its toe in the water for $45 million in May. The spec mansion spread over two lots in the Russian Hill neighborhood was built by the developer Troon Pacific over a period of six years. The double lot in one of the country’s most expensive markets should make buyers take notice. “What’s so extraordinary about this is the land,” says Joel Goodrich, director of the estates division with Coldwell Banker Global Luxury. “The land is irreplaceable in San Francisco.” On the coveted property, you’ll find two structures. The original main house designed by Willis Polk was completely revamped, and a one-bedroom guest cottage was added in 1907, just after the earthquake. This spectacular residence was “re-imagined for the future.” The main house features three floors, a sublevel art gallery, and a 40-foot cantilevered infinity pool overlooking the San Francisco skyline. The oversize lot allows for a rare San Francisco treat: an uninterrupted view. There’s a “275-foot-long frontage facing the view. You just don’t find that here,” Goodrich explains. “It’s a one of a kind for San Francisco.” The locale, just a half-block from the famed “crooked street” of Lombard, is within walking distance to the Jackson Square tech hub and the financial district. Surrounded by verdant gardens, the 9,500-square-foot main home has five beds, 6.5 baths, and an elevator. On the top level, the roomy master suite offers views of the garden and the city. The home features a luxe resort ambiance with its indoor-outdoor flow throughout its living, dining, and entertainment spaces. Guests can spill over onto the lawn, which includes two fire pits, the 40-foot pool, city views, and even a heated couch, which residents of the often-chilly city can appreciate year-round. The outdoor space also offers a home theater with projector and retractable screen. And for alfresco dining, a trellis-covered area beckons with chandelier lighting as well as a fireplace. Inside, entertainment on the lower level includes a two-story, multifunctional room, and a wine wall. It’s staged currently as an art space with pieces from local art galleries, but it could also work as a sport court or a concert venue. While parking in the neighborhood can be challenging, it’s a breeze for this homeowner. The property includes a four-car garage with a tunnel, as well as a covered driveway entrance. And even with the array of amenities, the home was built to be energy-efficient and environmentally responsible. Along with a LEED Platinum certification, the residence comes with a solar array, LED lighting, and rain water management for irrigation and toilets. For a buyer in search of a sumptuous space in San Francisco, there’s no need to look further. “You have an oasis in the middle of the city,” Goodrich says. We’ll sip to that!
