Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson may be a Hollywood power couple, but that doesn’t mean they don’t do normal things—like, say, sell their used furniture. After all, the actors sold two side-by-side Pacific Palisades properties last year. With much less room to house all their stuff, they needed to downsize their furnishings, too. So they’re auctioning off nearly 50 high-end pieces on the luxury consignment site Viyet. But don’t be fooled by their secondhand status: These furnishings are priced in the thousands—and while you may be able to pop something into your virtual shopping cart at the listed price, since Viyet is an auction site, a bidding war could drive those numbers even higher. These jaw-dropping prices are actually no big surprise, explains Alessandra Wood, director of style at home design site Modsy. “Like the stock market, art and antiques can fluctuate in price year over year,” she says. “You can always expect to pay a bit more for pieces with special provenance, such as those belonging to famous collectors or celebrated public figures.” OK, so really nice used furniture can become more valuable over time—nonetheless, we’re still a bit surprised that Hanks and Wilson are trying to scratch out some cash by pawning their old stuff. It’s unclear whether any proceeds from this sale will go to charity, and since such info is typically shouted from the rooftops, we’d have to surmise that any profits will line their own pockets (hey, no judgments). In any case, if you’re interested in adding a touch of Hollywood history to your home or you just want to see where Hanks has napped, check out some of the more noteworthy items in this glorified tag sale—and the stories behind them—and find out whether interior designers think they’re worth the splurge. Secretary desk, $5,000Hanks and Wilson previously adorned their bedroom with this secretary desk. “I kept all my personalized stationery in here and used the drawers to store it in boxes,” Wilson told Architectural Digest. Not only are the desk’s numerous cubbies a great place to store letters, but the piece also lives up to its $5,000 price tag, says Drew Henry, founder of Designer Dudes. The desk was crafted and hand-painted in Italy, and its hinged writing surface is lined in gold taffeta. “It’s a really high-quality piece,” he says. “I also think there’s something romantic about sitting down to write letters at an antique desk.” Wood inlay dining table, $6,595This custom-made, round dining table comes with a scratch or two, but, according to Wilson, that’s what makes it so hard to part with. The couple celebrated birthdays, dinner parties, and family gatherings around this table, which Wilson believes gives it positive energy, explaining, “I hope someone will have joyous moments around this table.” The table is one of the more expensive pieces for sale, and its quality craftsmanship is worth the high price tag, says Wood. “The $6,500 price tag is definitely taking its previous owners into account,” she notes. “However, one would expect to pay at least that price for a similar table new.” Small, rustic chairs, $75If Wilson’s beloved dining table and Italian desk are too pricey for your budget, the couple are also selling far more affordable items, including a set of Little Folk Art Inc. chairs. The small, rustic chairs covered in a distressed white paint are priced at only $75, which is affordable even outside Hollywood. Venetian mirror, $2,975Hanks and Wilson’s mirror was crafted by glass artisans in Venice, and the antique’s gold features and etched details make it a versatile piece, according to Henry. “It can be incorporated into a lot of styles, from traditional to regal to boho to even modern,” he says. “The lines are really great.” That said, Henry believes the price is a bit steep. “A good mirror is expensive, but it shouldn’t break the bank,” he adds. Still, the fact that Hollywood royalty have stared into its depths could make this mirror worth it for the right buyer. Modern sofa, $5,595This modern sofa, crafted by luxury furnisher Donghia, is where Hanks and Wilson kicked back. “Many a good nap was taken on these couches,” Wilson told People magazine. “They were from our living room. I love how chic they are. These seem to be timeless.” Damask slipcover dining chairs, $1,595If you want a seat at Wilson’s dinner table, consider this set of dining chairs. Custom-made for the actress, the chairs are covered in a vibrant gold and gray slipcover. As dining chairs tend to be an expensive purchase, Henry declares this set of four is reasonably priced. However, he notes the dated design of the chairs “remind me of my mom’s dining room in the early 2000s.” Italian painted dresser, $3,675Like most secondhand pieces, this antique dresser has some wear and tear, including scratches around the keyholes and a large chip on the front edge. The five-drawer dresser is made from hardwood with soft corners and features hand-painted farm scenes. Similar pieces were crafted as far back as the 18th century, which alone justifies this price, adds Wood. Plus, the exquisite artistry makes this dresser a fitting addition to any European-inspired room. One of the ’70s most infamous homes is now on the market. We’re talking about the lavish bachelor pad built in 1971 for basketball Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain. “Infamous” might be too strong a description for the $19 million mansion, but it’s definitely a home with a reputation. The NBA great memorably claimed he had bedded 20,000 women, more than a few of them in this Bel Air mansion. Bolstering his claims of debauchery were the home’s custom amenities and detailing: the master bedroom with the mirrored, retractable ceiling and the sunken bathtub at the foot of the bed; the playroom with the water bed floor; and the moatlike swimming pool that extended into the living room. Many of the home’s flashy features have since gone the way of leisure suits and macrame. Since the ’70s, the home has undergone substantial updates and added modern features to justify it multimillion-dollar price tag. Yet Chamberlain’s spirit and aesthetic remain in the five-story living room, the 200 tons of stonework, and the 14-foot-high, 2,000-pound front door. Chamberlain’s custom-built pool table remains, along with the in-ground spa in the dining area. The massive master suite still spans the entire second floor, but it no longer has the sunken bath at the foot of the bed. The “iconic fortress” on 2.5 acres atop a ridge line has six bedrooms and six baths. The 7,158-square-foot house was purchased by Dmitri Novikov for $6.55 million in 2008. He extensively remodeled the home, adding a chef’s kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and reconfiguring the downstairs space to include guest suites, offices, a media room, and garages. Chamberlain had purchased the parcel for $150,000 in 1968. His architect, David Rich, took a helicopter ride and spotted the lot, which overlooks the Stone Canyon Reservoir and features views of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Rich persuaded Chamberlain to build there, according to the Los Angeles Times. Rich built Chamberlain’s dream house for just over $1 million. The home was dubbed “Ursa Major,” the Latin name for the Big Dipper, which was Chamberlain’s nickname. In a 2004 biography of the basketball legend, author Robert Cherry likened the home to a smaller version of the Playboy mansion. In an NBA career spanning 14 seasons, Chamberlain averaged a remarkable 30 points and 23 rebounds per game. In 1962, he scored 100 points in a single game—a record that stands today. In 1991, he penned “A View From Above,” in which he made his legendary (perhaps dubious) claim about sleeping with tens of thousands of women. In 1999, Chamberlain died of congestive heart failure at home, in his beloved bed. He was 63. The post Wilt Chamberlain’s Revamped Bachelor Pad in Bel Air Is on the Market for $19M appeared first on Real Estate News & Insights | realtor.com®. via https://www.realtor.com/news/celebrity-real-estate/wilt-chamberlain-former-bachelor-pad/ It looks like Derek Jeter is finally saying “See ya!” to his castle in upstate New York. Now that the retired Yankees shortstop has firmly established roots in Florida as the co-owner and CEO of the Miami Marlins, he’s decided to sell the famous Tiedemann castle in Greenwood Lake, putting it on the market for $14.75 million. Jeter hit it out of the park when he bought the property in 2005 for $1,200,000, according to public records. Built on the western shore of Greenwood Lake in the Hudson Valley and a mere 90-minute drive from New York City, the castle is a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. But that’s not the only thing that attracted Jeter—he also has familial ties to the home. His maternal grandfather, William “Sonny” Connors, actually grew up there after he was adopted in the 1950s by John and Julia Tiedemann. The home was originally built in 1903, and the Tiedemann family purchased it in 1952. A castle fit for a kingJeter went to great lengths to restore the property to “magical” condition, according to the listing. He joined two parcels of land, measuring just over 4 acres and providing 700 feet of shoreline. Surrounded by a 6-foot-high stone wall, the 12,590-square-foot castle has six bedrooms, seven baths, and five half-baths. The interiors are polished and refined, with elegant custom millwork, wood floors, soaring ceilings, and skylights throughout. Outside there’s a guesthouse, pool house, and boathouse, along with a massive infinity pool, luxurious water features, and rolling green gardens. Over-the-top touches hiding in Derek Jeter’s castleOf course, every modern-day castle is sure to have its quirks, especially if it’s owned by one of the highest-paid baseball players ever. Ready to explore the rest of the house? Here are five truly exorbitant things we uncovered inside the lakeside locale. 1. There’s a Statue of Liberty replicaPerhaps Jeter wanted to pay homage to the state where he became a sports legend? One of the most notable features on the property is the metal Statue of Liberty, which stands watch on a stone pedestal in the garden. Whoever purchases the property will have to either have a soft spot for the Big Apple or be very patriotic. 2. It’s a chef’s paradise with a whopping four indoor kitchensAny home with a fully equipped chef’s kitchen is a veritable dream for someone who likes to cook, but a home with four kitchens (each with top-of-the-line appliances, mind you) is a bit much. Sure, the property is massive, and trotting meals out from the kitchen at one end of the castle to the other would be tedious, but still, four kitchens just seems excessive. Did we mention there’s also an outdoor kitchen with a wood-burning fireplace? 3. The stone turret can be seen from miles awayTrue to form, the castle has a giant stone turret standing tall and overlooking the water’s edge. You can climb the stairs inside for extensive lake views and access to the roof. Perhaps the most whimsical amenity is the widow’s walk, a lookout at the top of the turret that’s named for the wives of mariners who would watch for their spouses’ return. 4. A lagoon sits inside the castle groundsOne of the aforementioned luxurious water features is the lagoon with a fountain in the middle. It sits right between the main house and the shore of the lake. We’re not sure what its purpose is other than to contribute to the opulence of the property. 5. A stone waterfallLuxurious water feature No. 3 is this massive stone waterfall that cascades from the infinity pool to the lagoon below. As you can see, this isn’t just any waterfall you’d find in a backyard. It’s an authentic re-creation of something you’re likely to find on one of the surrounding Hudson Valley hiking trails. A “Fixer Upper” home from Season 2 of the hit HGTV show is the most popular home this week on realtor.com®. Eternally popular renovation wizards Chip and Joanna Gaines worked their magic on the home known as the “Faceless Bunker” a few years ago. Now, this major transformation is on the market for a massive $1.15 million, slightly more than Waco’s $265,000 median home price. The Gaines effect can’t be overstated. This week’s runner-up, Indiana’s Marian Hills Farm, is on the market for the first time after being in the same family for seven generations. With its rustic charm and romantic location, it’s served as a wedding venue for the last five years, as well as a key filming location for “The Bachelor” in 2016. The 22-acre spread comes with the original brick-and-wood house built from materials found on the property, as well as a main home, and a barn converted to an event space. Other properties attracting clicks this week include the Manor in Los Angeles, now offered with a price cut to $175 million, a “picture-perfect” Cape Cod beach house in Massachusetts, and a baronial estate that could be mistaken for a small castle in New York for $14,750,000. She had put the home on the market in late April for $615,000. The new homeowner—C.L. Swanson Corp.—quickly listed the home available to rent for $4,600 a month. Loesch, a conservative pundit, had purchased the four-bedroom home in 2013. In 2017, Loesch and her husband upgraded and bought a roomier residence, also in Southlake. It was easy to turn the property into a rental—the renovated home was in turn-key condition. The 3,672-square-foot house sits on a half-acre lot in Chapel Downs Subdivision. The “gorgeously remodeled” home is in a cul-de-sac and surrounded by large trees. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet, private balcony, and en suite bath with separate vanities. Two more bedrooms share a bath, and there’s a fourth en suite bedroom. The updated kitchen features stone counters and white cabinets. The living room has large windows and a fireplace, which is connected to the formal dining room. Outside, a grassy lawn, pool, and spa beckon. In great news for potential tenants, lawn and pool maintenance, along with pest control, are provided. Pets are also allowed. Loesch has appeared on Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBS, and HBO. She holds the post of special assistant to the executive vice president for public communication with the National Rifle Association, and hosts “The DL” on NRA TV. The listing first made waves when it came on the market in 2016. At the time, the island was priced at a potentially record-breaking $175 million—it was also the Nutmeg State’s most expensive property—but there were no takers. The island is back, with a lower price and a new listing agent, David Turner of Houlihan Lawrence. Even with a $55 million price cut, it’s still the state’s priciest property. Known as Great Island, it has 1 mile of coastline on Long Island Sound and is connected by a land bridge to the mainland. A private driveway leads to a grand, nine-bedroom manor built in 1902. The main house, a stone Colonial, tops 13,000 square feet and has seven fireplaces. The master suite includes a private balcony, fireplace, and walk-in closet. The large living room is graced with a vaulted ceiling and a fireplace; there’s also a formal dining room and an eat-in kitchen. The grounds feature a garden, balcony, pool, and terraces. Other structures on the island include a 19th-century farmhouse, guest and caretaker houses, and a seaside cottage. One side of the island has craggy outcroppings, while the other side has a private, white-sand beach with accompanying beach and bath houses. A deep-water dock can accommodate a 100-foot yacht. If you can’t imagine summering without your favorite steed, fear not. The property includes an equestrian center with an 18-stall granite stable with an arched tile ceiling “similar to the one in Grand Central Terminal’s Oyster Bar,” according to Town and Country magazine. There’s also an indoor and outdoor grand prix and dressage arenas. About 50 miles from New York City, the island has been in the hands of one family, “cherished for generations,” according to the listing. But now, the family’s descendants have decided to sell. The post After $55M Discount, $120M Great Island in CT Is This Week’s Most Expensive New Listing appeared first on Real Estate News & Insights | realtor.com®. via https://www.realtor.com/news/trends/great-island-connecticut-most-expensive/ If you love birds and ghosts, or at least are willing to tolerate birds and ghosts, this $675,000 home in Youngsville, LA, might be your dream home. Let’s start with the birds. Built in 1851 in the Acadian style, the home comes with both a chicken coop and a two-story pigeonnier with a spiral staircase. A pigeonnier, or dovecote, is a circular building with nest holes for domesticated pigeons. So why would you want to encourage pigeons to live on your property? It may seem odd to city dwellers who harbor anti-pigeon bias (“rats with wings” is an oft-heard phrase), but pigeons are actually a delicacy when they’re living in a gorgeous Acadian-style pigeonnier instead of eating cigarette butts outside Penn Station. They also make nice pets and can be trained to fly on command. Another feature of this home that will be a plus for some and a minus for others is that it is possibly haunted. If rubbing elbows with ghosts is on your nice-to-have list, this home is for you. Fortunately, there are also many, many features of the property with more universal appeal. The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath, 3,154-square-foot house is full of period details, including the original hardwood floors, stained-glass windows, 12-foot ceilings, and a Southern-style front porch. The kitchen is spacious and recently updated, with high-end appliances and a huge island. The two-story home also has a formal dining room, office, 700-square-foot bonus room on the lower floor, and fireplaces throughout. The luxe master bath features one of those fireplaces, along with dual sinks, a soaking tub, and a double walk-in shower. The grounds include a saltwater pool, three-car carport, two covered storage areas (ideal for boats, trucks, or other vehicles), a stocked pond, gazebo, dock, and 450-square-foot guesthouse. Old-growth oaks line the driveway, and fig, orange, kumquat, apricot, and pecan trees are scattered throughout the 5 acres of unrestricted land surrounding the property. You get all of this for less than $700,000! So even if you’re feeling a little unsure of the ghosts, pigeons, and chickens, this house has a lot to offer. And if you’re an avian type with a love of apparitions, it’s all the better. The post To Truly Appreciate This 1851 Louisiana Home, You Must Love Ghosts and Birds appeared first on Real Estate News & Insights | realtor.com®. via https://www.realtor.com/news/unique-homes/louisiana-home-possibly-haunted/ Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be residing mainly at Kensington Palace these days, but our favorite royal newlyweds need a weekend country house, too! Reports are circulating, in fact, that they’re building a six-bedroom manor on a property a couple of hours outside London known, of all things, as “Beggar’s Lodge.” While the royal family won’t confirm or deny these rumors, the timeline is pretty telling. In November, soon after the couple announced their engagement, an unnamed buyer quietly inked a deal to purchase a 13-acre parcel in Gloucestershire. While some run-down farm buildings are currently situated there, floor plans and computer renderings soon surfaced on the West Oxfordshire District Council’s website indicating that these structures will be torn down to make room for these way posher digs. These floor plans were amended just a day before the royal wedding, with an unnamed source telling the Daily Mail, “The property has been earmarked for a specific couple and the project is shrouded in secrecy, so naturally the assumption in the village is that Meghan and Harry might move in. … The property will take at least a year to build, which would explain why they are renting in the area for that amount of time.” As for why the area’s called Beggar’s Lodge, that’s anyone’s guess—but it sure is ironic given the scope of the house being built there now. Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live here?As further evidence that the newlyweds are the masterminds behind this new house, the computer renderings and floor plans certainly seem worthy of royalty. I mean, who else would need three reception rooms, as well as massive staff quarters for butlers, drivers, and security guards? Located at the end of a 150-yard tree-lined drive, the stone-built estate will also feature a high-tech media room, huge walk-in closet, flagstone terrace, and 150-foot yew topiary. Talk about fancy! But not everyone approves of these plans in their entirety—starting with the fact that they’ll be demolishing the historical farm buildings currently there, rather than trying to restore or salvage them in some manner. Although the new plans and site elevations are impressive and blend with the surrounding area, it is always a concern to lose historical buildings on an old Roman farm such as this, says Kelly Parks, a broker at Paris Gibson Realty. Then again, given their main home in Kensington Palace is centuries-old and lacking in many modern amenities (air conditioning, anyone?), perhaps they’re sick of old homes and eager to have something shiny and new. “Nothing is like having a home built from the ground up, with all the bells and whistles that you can imagine,” says Sheryl English, a luxury real estate agent at eXp Realty in Dallas. “When given the opportunity, many clients love new construction over the process of renovating. The idea that no one has ever even used the toilet in the property makes them giddy.” So, perhaps we should give the royal couple a pass for wanting to wipe this slate clean and start fresh. “While it is a shame that they could not have kept something on the property that has historical significance, such as a farm building, and turned it into a guesthouse, it may not have been possible to retain the older structures while trying to build a new home,” says Florida real estate agent Cara Ameer. “It is often easier to just start with a blank canvas versus trying to retrofit existing things into the mix.” Is their new home more English or American?Another feature worth noting about this new house is its quintessential “Englishness,” in spite of the fact that Markle is American. “With Meghan being an American, it is interesting there wasn’t more of a modern or transitional influence incorporated into the plans in some way with regard to the layout of the bedrooms,” observes Ameer. “It is interesting that all of the bedrooms are on the second and third floors with little to no separation, unlike the more American aesthetic of having a split floor plan with a master suite on one side of the home and the rest of the bedrooms located on the other.” Another cool thing worth noting? “The best feature about the plans is the incorporation of bat and bird boxes on the residence,” says Parks. “I only wish we had those features on plans in the U.S. Bats are so important, and so are homes for them. To add a bat box to a new structure is like a dream come true in my opinion, as a bat conservancy fan.” Of course, only time will tell whether this place is truly where Harry and Markle will be kicking back. Nonetheless, it sounds like an amazing home—for bats, birds, and royalty. The post Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Building a House?
