A 63-acre island compound in Darien, CT, has splashed back on the market for $120 million, making it this week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com®. The listing first made waves when it came on the market in 2016. At the time, the island was priced at a potentially record-breaking $175 million—it was also the Nutmeg State’s most expensive property—but there were no takers. The island is back, with a lower price and a new listing agent, David Turner of Houlihan Lawrence. Even with a $55 million price cut, it’s still the state’s priciest property. Known as Great Island, it has 1 mile of coastline on Long Island Sound and is connected by a land bridge to the mainland. A private driveway leads to a grand, nine-bedroom manor built in 1902. The main house, a stone Colonial, tops 13,000 square feet and has seven fireplaces. The master suite includes a private balcony, fireplace, and walk-in closet. The large living room is graced with a vaulted ceiling and a fireplace; there’s also a formal dining room and an eat-in kitchen. The grounds feature a garden, balcony, pool, and terraces. Other structures on the island include a 19th-century farmhouse, guest and caretaker houses, and a seaside cottage. One side of the island has craggy outcroppings, while the other side has a private, white-sand beach with accompanying beach and bath houses. A deep-water dock can accommodate a 100-foot yacht. If you can’t imagine summering without your favorite steed, fear not. The property includes an equestrian center with an 18-stall granite stable with an arched tile ceiling “similar to the one in Grand Central Terminal’s Oyster Bar,” according to Town and Country magazine. There’s also an indoor and outdoor grand prix and dressage arenas. About 50 miles from New York City, the island has been in the hands of one family, “cherished for generations,” according to the listing. But now, the family’s descendants have decided to sell.
